Growing Watermelons in East Texas
Start watermelon seeds after the last frost, when soil temperatures reach at least 70°F. East Texas springs warm up quickly, making late March to early April ideal for planting. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil and plenty of room—watermelon vines love to sprawl.
Amend the soil with compost or aged manure to boost fertility. Plant seeds in mounds or hills spaced 3–5 feet apart, allowing vines to stretch. Water deeply but infrequently, encouraging roots to grow strong and deep. Mulch around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the soil temperature steady.
Pollination is key, so welcome bees and other pollinators by planting nearby flowers. As fruits begin to form, reduce watering slightly to concentrate sweetness.
Harvesting Watermelons
Watermelons take about 80–100 days to mature. Look for signs of ripeness: the underside turns creamy yellow, the tendril nearest the fruit dries out, and the melon sounds hollow when tapped. Resist the urge to pick early—patience pays off in flavor.
Use garden shears to cut the fruit from the vine, leaving a few inches of stem. Handle gently to avoid bruising.
