Homesteading with Ducks & Geese

Ducks and geese bring a lively charm to the pond at Mint Berry Homestead. Their waddling steps, gentle honks, and graceful glides across the water create a peaceful rhythm in the landscape. These waterfowl thrive in pond habitats, where they forage for insects, aquatic plants, and small critters. A well-kept pond offers clean water, natural enrichment, and space for preening, dabbling, and nesting.
Seasonally, the pond becomes a haven for visiting wildlife. Cranes, wild ducks, and other migratory birds stop by, adding movement and diversity to the homestead ecosystem. Their presence deepens the connection to nature and reminds us of the land’s role in supporting life beyond our own flocks.
Ducks, in particular, are valued for their eggs. Slightly larger and richer than chicken eggs, they’re a favorite among bakers. Their higher fat and protein content makes cakes fluffier, custards silkier, and breads more tender. They’re especially useful in gluten-free baking, thanks to their superior binding qualities. Geese lay fewer eggs, but their seasonal contributions are still appreciated for special recipes.
Raising waterfowl comes with its own challenges. Predators like raccoons, foxes, coyotes, and aerial hunters such as hawks and owls pose constant threats. Even domestic dogs can be dangerous. Secure fencing, nighttime shelter, and predator-proof housing are essential. Clean water and dry bedding also help prevent disease and foot issues, especially during wet seasons.
Despite the work, ducks and geese are a joy to raise. They’re excellent foragers, natural pest control, and surprisingly social once bonded. Their eggs, feathers, and presence offer beauty and utility, while enriching the homestead with life and movement.
With the right care and habitat, waterfowl bring nourishment, companionship, and a deeper connection to the rhythms of nature.
